Chapter 12

Bianca still had not told me the reason for her visit, and since I’ve known her since the minute she was born, I knew it wasn’t only to visit dear old Mom. I wasn’t going to come right out and ask, but I was dropping hints.

But we were both tired, and it would have to wait until morning.

The next morning, we were up early and were enjoying the early morning breeze. I enjoyed the quiet as we sipped our coffee and watched the um rise. It was going to be a beautiful day.

“If Lili were here, we would be treated to her blueberry muffins.” I went inside to warm up some cinnamon coffee cake.

Earlier, we had heard Bob go out for a ride on his Harley. The distinct sound of a Harley-Davidson is like nothing else in the world.

Peggy and Josh were not up yet. Late sleepers.

I looked over at my beautiful daughter. “So, Bianca, is Henry watching the cupcake factory?”

“Yes, he and Barry are covering for me while I visit with you. Barry is between stunt gigs right now, and so he has a week or so to help out.”

“I really like Barry,” I said. “They make a nice couple.”

“They do,” Bianca agreed as she nibbled on the coffee cake. “Mom…”

Here it comes. She was about to tell me the real reason she was visiting, and I knew it wasn’t to go hiking or mountain climbing. There was a reason for her visit. I could sense it.

“I’m thinking of having a baby.”

I swallowed my coffee, and as the saying goes, it went down the wrong pipe, and I started coughing. Bianca was slapping me on my back as the coffee came out of my nose. She ran into the camper and brought me a bottle of water and a tissue. I took a minute to drink some water until I could talk again.

“Mom, are you okay now? I didn’t intend for you to choke on your coffee!” she said with a sheepish grin. “Sorry to spring it on you, but I’m close to turning thirty, and I think it’s time.”

I didn’t know what to say. Reminded me of when I had the birds and the bees discussion with my kids. I took care of our girls, and Jack covered our boys. She was looking at me now for a response, and that’s when Irma showed up. She was holding a pink plastic flamingo and was wearing a white lab coat. Bianca looked in the direction of where I was staring at Irma. She didn’t say anything and then looked back at me.

“Bianca, having a child as a single mother is something I think you should consider very, very seriously. You know I’m old-fashioned. Marriage and then children.”

“I haven’t met someone I want to spend the rest of my life with, and I don’t know if I ever will. I’m busy with my business. I don’t have time to date.”

“Well, a baby is a 24/7 deal. How are you going to find time for a baby? The first year, they keep you up at night.
